The High Level Route on Pillar, above Ennerdale

Two teams were involved in the rescue of a walker who was airlifted from a Lakeland fell.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was alerted just before 9pm yesterday after the walker slipped on ice on the High Level Route on the northern flank of Pillar, suffering a head injury.

Fifteen volunteer members of the Cockermouth team went to the aid of the injured walker and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey flew to the site. Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team also called out 14 members.

The incident happened between Robinson’s Cairn and Looking Stead on the exposed route, which overlooks Ennerdale.

The helicopter crew managed to winch the casualty aboard and the Wasdale team stood its members down, with the rescue ending about 11pm.
