The woman gashed her leg while coming down Whernside

A walker was stretchered from Yorkshire’s highest mountain after injuring her leg.

The 68-year-old woman, from the USA, slipped and suffered a deep four-inch gash to her leg while coming down from the summit ridge of Whernside today.

The Cave Rescue Organisation was called out shortly before 3.40pm and went to the site on the eastern side of the 736m (2,415ft) fell, on the path leading down to Chapel-le-Dale.

She was treated by team members at the scene and they then stretchered her down the fellside to Bruntscar, where an ambulance took her to hospital.

The callout was the team’s 30th of the year.
