Sutty with Sian after his rescue

A dog hailed as a hero when he alerted climbers to his critically injured owner’s plight after a 600ft fall from a Snowdonia mountain has himself been rescued after 10 days stuck on the hill.

Sutty, a 14-year-old cross-bred King Charles spaniel went missing after his 60-year-old master was airlifted to hospital after falling 200m near the Atlantic Slabs on Carnedd y Filiast.

Walkers and climbers were asked to be on the lookout for the dog and Facebook and Twitter messages were put out about the animal’s plight.

And yesterday, two climbers heard him whimpering and a rescue operation successfully recovered Sutty from his position on a small ledge on the mountain, at the northern end of the Glyderau range in the Ogwen Valley.

Chris Lloyd of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, which was involved in the original rescue of Sutty’s owner, said the two walkers came across the dog while heading out for a climb on Saturday evening.

He said: “The couple are local and had walked up to the crag, having commented as they passed a ‘wanted’ poster for Sutty.

“They set off up their route. At the first stance, the two could hear the whimpering.

“It was difficult to locate the source of the sound, so they down-climbed and went in search.

“Rob Shepherd, a member of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, made a difficult ascent on steep and broken ground, to find Sutty sheltering on a very small ledge.

“Concerned for a safe evacuation from this location, he called Ogwen Valley MRT for a small party with additional ropes.

“However, with the assistance of a local OVMRO member and Rob’s partner, Sian Williams, a ropeway was formed and Sutty was lowered in Sian’s rucksack.”

The rescue, which began about 7.30pm, ended at 10pm.

The injured walker’s daughter travelled up from the West Midlands for an emotional reunion with Sutty.

Mr Lloyd said the dog was in a remarkable condition.

His owner has now regained consciousness and is being treated in a Birmingham hospital.
