The pair got trapped in Swinsto Hole near the Turbary Road above Kingsdale

Two men were rescued after spending 12 hours underground in a cave in the Yorkshire Dales.

The pair, aged 40 and 45, were reported seriously overdue after going down Swinsto Hole in Kingsdale on a pull-through trip.

Police found the cavers’ car in Kingsdale and called out the Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation at 1.50am today.

A team spokesperson said: “After checking Turbary Pot two search teams descended Swinsto Hole and Simpson’s Pot, while a third searched up from Valley Entrance.

“The overdue cavers were discovered upstream of the final Swinsto pitch, having failed to find their way on from the Great Aven.

“Both were escorted to the surface, none the worse for their 12-hour underground experience.”
