A man was rescued from a Lake District after suffering serious injuries at a quarry used by climbers.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was called out in the early hours of this morning after being alerted to the incident.

The man, in his 50s, fell about 15m (50ft) at Hodge Close Quarry near Coniston.

The team was called out about 35 minutes after midnight and joined Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics from North West Ambulance Service in the operation.

A Coniston MRT spokesperson said: “The man who was camping in the area was treated for severe head and probable chest injuries before being evacuated from the quarry.

“He was transferred to an ambulance from North West Ambulance Service and taken to Furness General Hospital [in Barrow in Furness].”
