Four young children were among eight walkers rescued after getting lost on England’s third highest mountain.

The group called for help after they lost their way in mist yesterday near the 950m (3,117ft) summit of Helvellyn.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 6.30pm and 17 volunteer members were involved in the incident.

A team spokesperson said: “Because of the youngsters involved, and the impending poor weather, a search was mounted immediately.

“The group then reported themselves to be on a path, and they were located fairly quickly by team members and a team search dog halfway between Brown Cove Crags and The Swirls.

“They were escorted down to their transport.”
