Wast Water Screes, scene of the rescue

Mountain rescuers used their specialist boat to reach a group of three walkers stuck on a rocky path in the Lake District.

The trio called for help after one of them was unable to continue along the Wast Water Screes.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 3.55pm yesterday after being alerted by police.

A team spokesperson said the three walkers were stuck on the path, below Illgill Head, between the two boulder fields on the route. “One of the group had weakness and pain in the knees that had been aggravated by crossing over the big boulder field and could not make any more progress,” the spokesperson said.

“She was helped down to our boat which took her and party over to the other, safer side of the lake.”

The rescue, which involved 16 volunteer team members, ended at 6.30pm.
