A mountain rescuer answered a knock at his door to find the family of an injured walker requesting help.

The man, from Cambridge, had slipped and injured his ankle about 200m from the cottage where the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team member lived.

The rescuer alerted the police and his team-mates who came to the aid of the walker on Thursday near the Seldom Seen cottages in the Glencoyne Valley overlooking Ullswater.

Patterdale MRT members were able to reach the injured man within an hour of his family raising the alarm at 2.30pm.

He was treated at the scene and stretchered to one of the team’s Land Rovers.

The walker was taken to the team’s base at Patterdale. A team spokesperson said: “He was then transferred to a North West ambulance which took him to the accident and emergency department at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.”

Seven volunteer team members took part in the rescue, the team’s second of 2014.
