The walker was airlifted from the site near the summit of Great Gable

An injured walker was airlifted from a Lake District mountain in an operation involving two helicopters.

The 67-year-old man, from Derby, fell on Great Gable yesterday, injuring his knee.

He rang 999 after he was unable to continue, and Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 3.55pm.

The Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the scene from its base near Penrith and helped fly rescue team members to the site on the 899m (2,949ft) fell.

A Sea King search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland also flew to help in the rescue.

The man was treated at the scene then winched into the aircraft and was flown to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.

The rescue operation lasted four hours.
