A climber was injured when he fell from a route on a Yorkshire Dales crag.
The 38-year-old was tackling the Town Hall Corner route on Castleberg Crag above Settle today when a large area of rock came away.
The man fell about 5m (16ft) and suffered serious leg injuries.
The Clapham-based Cave Rescue Organisation was called out shortly after 1pm and members went to the scene overlooking the North Yorkshire town.
A CRO spokesperson said: “Following treatment by paramedics and CRO he was lowered by stretcher and then carried down to a road ambulance in Settle for subsequent transfer to an air ambulance at the Settle rugby field.”
Three minutes after the callout, a second request for help came after a 28-year-old woman was reported to have dislocated her hip on Ingleborough while taking part in the Yorkshire Thee Peaks Challenge.
The team spokesperson said: “Information was vague but further investigation with the informant and the walk organisers established that the injury had occurred several hours earlier and that she had most likely got herself off the hill.
“After discussion with the police no further action was taken.”
Castleberg Crag was reopened to climbing in 2009 after work by local residents, activists and the British Mountaineering Council. A woman was injured in a fall on the day of the opening and a year later a climber said he had experienced a ‘near-death experience’ when a large rock flake became detached and almost hit his belayer.
