A woman was airlifted to hospital after badly breaking her leg when she slipped while walking in the Lake District.

The 66-year-old from Bedfordshire was near Slater Bridge in Little Langdale when the incident happened about 1pm yesterday.

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was called out and the Great North Air Ambulance flew to the scene, where the woman had an open fracture of her lower leg.

A rescue team doctor and the air ambulance doctor and paramedic treated her at the scene before the helicopter flew her to hospital in Preston, Lancashire, for further treatment.

Ten volunteers from the Langdale team took part in the two-hour rescue.
