A walker was airlifted to hospital after slipping and breaking his ankle on a Lake District fell.

The 70-year-old man from France was walking on Whiteless Pike today when he broke and dislocated his ankle.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 1.35pm and 16 volunteers went to the man’s aid.

The Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the scene and, after the mountain rescue team’s doctor treated the injured man, he was flown by the helicopter crew to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treaatment.
