Rescuers have praised the skills of the crew of an RAF search and rescue helicopter during an incident in the Cairngorms.

The Sea King helicopter was called in to help members of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team who had been called out to help a climber who fell in Coire an t-Sneachda on Cairn Gorm.

The 25-year-old man fell in blizzard conditions yesterday, Saturday, and 21 members of the rescue team set out, prepared for a long stretcher carry at night.

A team spokesperson said: “Thanks to some superb work by R137 [from RAF Lossiemouth] in very challenging flying conditions, the casualty was airlifted from the hill, saving us a very tough evening.

“Thanks very much to R137, and best wishes to the casualty for a speedy recovery.”

Team leader Willie Anderson described the pilot’s skills in whiteout conditions as ‘awesome’.

Braemar Mountain Rescue Team was called out today to aid two walkers stranded near Loch Etchachan in wintry conditions.

The man and woman were found safe and well in a bothy and led to safety by team members.
