Walkers must be prepared to get their feet, and more, wet on the walk across the bay

Walkers willing to get their feet and legs wet are being sought by a charity for a trip accompanied by a guide with royal approval.

The Friends of the Lake District is holding a 13km (8-mile) walk across Morecambe Bay’s notorious sands and mudflats to raise cash for its work.

The organisation said its sponsored walk next month will take participants across the largest expanse of tidal mudflats and sand in the United Kingdom.

“This landscape is constantly moving and shifting so you will be led by Cedric Robinson, the Queen’s Official Guide to the Sands, who has been leading these walks across the bay for over 50 years,” a spokesperson said.

“The walk is suitable for anyone who is comfortable walking for three to four hours. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and well behaved dogs are welcome. The majority of the walk will be on sand but there will be times where you will need to wade through some channels so be prepared to get wet up to your knees.”

The charity hopes to raise £7,000 this year, which will go towards its work planting native woodlands and hay meadows, running campaigns to protect the Lake District from inappropriate developments and helping people volunteer, learn skills and engage with the landscape of the area.

The popular event will take place on Saturday 13 June, starting at 3pm from Arnside Promenade. The walk will end at Kent’s Bank, near Grange-over-Sands about 6.30pm.

Registration costs £10 and includes a free event t-shirt. Walkers can register via the Friends of the Lake District website or by phoning them on 01539 720788.
