A couple had to be rescued after getting into difficulties at a Lake District cave that featured in a television programme.

The man and woman called for help from the Priest’s Hole on Dove Crag in the early hours of Friday.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by Cumbria Constabulary about 1.50am, with information the woman was suffering from hypothermia.

A team spokesperson said: “Contact was quickly established with the informant and with an update on their condition and location a small team was deployed to their location.

“On arrival at scene they were again assessed and provided with dry clothing, a warm drink and food and then escorted down from the crag.

“The couple were extremely grateful for assistance and we wish them all the best for future bivvy trips.”

The 4½-hour rescue involved six volunteers from Patterdale MRT.

The Priest’s Hole featured in BBC One’s Secret Britain last year and was the scene of a fatal fall in October when Kevin Ryan slipped and plunged 500ft near the Priest’s Hole.

The 50-year-old sports massage therapist from Cleethorpes was with a group planning to camp overnight in the cave.
