Cliffhanger will host the British Bouldering Championships

A free event aimed at outdoors fans will take place in Sheffield, offering activities from climbing to parkour, mountain biking and scuba diving.

Visitors to Cliffhanger 2017 will also get a chance to see newly crowned world cup bouldering champion Shauna Coxsey in action.

The event was previously a paid-for attraction, but following its move last year to the city centre, the core of Cliffhanger is free to attend.

Sheffield Business Improvement District is backing the event, which is running under The Outdoor City banner. Activities also include orienteering, assault courses and skateboarding.

There will also be exhibitions by the National Trust, plus live music on the Friday and Saturday evenings.

The main Cliffhanger 2017 events take place on Saturday 8 July and Sunday 9 July.

Matt Heason, who is involved in organising the event, said: “From a viewing perspective, the highlight of the event will be the British Bouldering Championships on a huge temporary climbing wall on Devonshire Green.

“The competition will feature Sheffield resident Shauna Coxsey, crowned earlier this month as the bouldering world cup winner, and ranked number one in the world. Qualifiers for the competition will take place on Saturday, with the semis and finals on the Sunday afternoon and morning respectively.

“If you want to have a go at something different, the highlight this year will be a 5m jump into an airbag outside the Town Hall – note that there will be a charge for this, the zipwire, and the other fairground activities, but the rest of the activities will be free of charge.”

The activities and displays will take place on Devonshire Green, in the Winter Gardens, Peace Gardens and Millennium Square, with the giant zipwire and skateboarding on Barker’s Pool.
