A man has died after falling more than 300ft from a Lake District cliff.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 12.05pm on Thursday to reports the man had fallen while scrambling on Dow Crag.

Volunteers from the team were joined by the Great North Air Ambulance and the Prestwick Coastguard helicopter at the site on the South Rake of the crag.

A Coniston team spokesperson said: “Despite the best efforts of all involved the man had succumbed to serious multiple injuries, having fallen over 300ft.

“Coniston MRT would like to extend its condolences to the man’s family and friends.”

The team also thanked the helicopter crews for their help.

The spokesperson said: “With the existing conditions the snow is hard packed in gullies and where the sun doesn’t reach and hence any slip or stumble can result in a serious outcome.

“Despite reasonable temperatures at valley level and a recent thaw of some lying snow, many areas remain in full winter conditions.

“With colder weather now becoming entrenched again for the foreseeable future, and the likelihood of further significant snowfall, the team would like to reiterate previous recommendations regarding correct equipment and experience.”
