Missing walker Stephen Mitchell

Police are appealing to outdoor enthusiasts for sightings of a hillwalker who has been reported missing in the Highlands.

Stephen Mitchell set off for a walk in the Strathcarron area on Friday.

The 57-year-old was planning to visit Bendronaig Lodge, Lurg Mhòr and Bearneas, south of Achnashellach.

Police Scotland said he is believed to have been seen near Beinn Dronaig about 9am on Saturday. His car was found parked near the Strathcarron Hotel on Monday morning.

Mr Mitchell is described as 6ft (1.83m) tall with grey hair and will likely have greying stubble. He no longer wears glasses as shown in the photograph.

He is carrying a black rucksack and has either an orange or sulphur-coloured sleeping bag.

A police spokesperson said: “He was intending to sleep in bothies during the walk and we are asking anyone who used bothies in the area over the weekend to get in touch.

“Anyone with information regarding Stephen’s whereabouts is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference NP1324/18.”
