A major search is underway for a walker who has gone missing in the Yorkshire Dales.

Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team has been joined by members of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service from RAF Leeming in the operation to find Harry Harvey.

The 80-year-old was reported missing about 1.30pm on Sunday after going walking in the Gunnerside area of Swaledale.

A police helicopter has also been used in the search for the missing walker. North Yorkshire Police appealed to farmers, gamekeepers and others who work in the rural area around Keld and Muker to check outbuildings and sheltered areas.

Mountain rescuers are searching the between Gunnerside Gill and the Tan Hill Inn for Mr Harvey.

A police spokesperson said: “He had been walking when he disappeared, possibly after getting lost en route. Despite being a competent hiker we are concerned for his welfare.”

Police said he was wearing a black jacket, black trousers and hiking boots.
