A walker has died after falling on a Snowdonia mountain.

Rescuers who found the man’s body said they believed he fell at least 300ft.

The 58-year-old told his roommate at the Pen-y-pass youth hostel he was heading out for a walk up Glyder Fawr on Wednesday morning in good weather, but left no further details. He failed to return to his accommodation that evening.

Chris Lloyd of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, one of three teams who undertook a search for the walker, said police were informed early on Thursday.

He said: “Both Llanberis and Ogwen MRTs were called out. In addition, RAF Valley MRT and the MCA helicopter from Caernarfon.

“Search parties were deployed up both sides of the Glyder range. The weather and visibility were poor with cloud level varying, covering the tops.

“The RAF, closely followed by members of Ogwen, found the casualty a good distance down the steep and loose footpath adjacent Bristly Ridge. There were no signs of life. It is believed he may have fallen 100m or more.”

The Coastguard helicopter, which was still in the area, flew more members of the Llanberis team up to the site, along with equipment, so the walker’s body could be brought from the mountainside.

He was stretchered by members from all three teams to Cwm Tryfan and to the Ogwen Valley MRO base and into the care of police and an undertaker.

An Ogwen Valley MRO spokesperson said: “The thoughts of the team are with the casualty’s family and friends.”
