Climbers and walkers have been warned to stay away from a popular island after a stomach bug swept its inhabitants.

Lundy, in the Bristol channel, is closed to visitors while authorities try to contain the gastroenteritis outbreak, which leads to diarrhoea and vomiting.

So far, 54 people have been affected. The Landmark Trust, which runs the 3½-mile-long granite outcrop off the north Devon coast, has stopped all visits until 4 October. Anyone who has booked a visit should receive a call from staff.

Staff from the trust have carried out a mass disinfecting of premises, but this has failed to eradicate the virus.
