A callout for a north Wales mountain rescue team gave members paws for thought.
Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation went to the aid of dog-tired walker who became stranded on the Gribin ridge while descending from the Glyderau.
Nero, a 10-year-old black labrador from Chester, was attempting a mountain excursion with his owner on Saturday morning when he succumbed to raw paw pads and failing back legs after an ascent of Y Garn and the screes of Glyder Fawr. His owner decided to halt her traverse of the Glyders and escape off the tops via Y Gribin. However, despite help from passers-by, Nero’s owner soon realised she needed help and the mountain rescue team was called out.
Four members of the organisation went to the aid of the 30kg (4st 10lb) dog and his walker.
Chris Lloyd of the team said: “We started with the dog inside the carry bag for the casualty bag.
“This was secured to the small stretcher and pack frame that came with a model of the Bell stretcher. However, this wasn’t a very even ride and the black dog on a hot day was warming up. So the shoulder carry was the answer with frequent breaks for dog and mountain rescue troops.”
The dog and his owner were finally reunited at the team’s base at Bryn Poeth after he was carried down to Cwm Idwal and then the car park at Idwal Cottage, three members having carried Nero and the fourth escorting his owner off the mountain.
The callout lasted 4¾ hours. Mr Lloyd added that the woman had made the right decision in calling out the rescue team.
