Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team used its boat in the search for Mr Salisbury

Police have named the man whose body was recovered from Ullswater early this morning.

Chad Edward Salisbury, 18, from the Leyland, Lancashire, area, was identified by next of kin.

His body was found by Cumbria Constabulary’s underwater search rescue team at 2.16am, near to Pooley Bridge.

He had been reported missing 12 hours earlier after his kayak capsized on the water. Police and members of the public were joined in the search by Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, which used its rescue boat, along with craft from Outward Bound and the national park authority. Coastguard staff also took part in the search and the Great North Air Ambulance was used in an aerial search of the lake.

Mr Salisbury’s death is the second drowning on the lake this year. In May, 62-year-old Tony Thwaites of Alcester, Warwickshire, drowned after going overboard from a pleasure steamer on the lake. His body was found a week after shocked trippers witnessed the event on board The Lady of the Lake steamer.
