Malham Cove. The man fell from the left-hand side of the Halfway Ledge

A man has died after falling from a Yorkshire Dales crag which is a favourite with climbers.

The Cave Rescue Organisation was called at about 11.35 this morning after reports that a man had fallen about 25m (82ft) from Malham Cove, an 80m (260ft) limestone cliff with more than 200 routes on it.

The cove is also a popular destination for walkers and day trippers.

The man is understood to have fallen to his death from the left-hand side of the Halfway Ledge.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended, along with the fire service and ambulance paramedics. Members of the Cave Rescue Organisation helped North Yorkshire Police recover the man’s body from the foot of the cove.

The CRO’s volunteers carry out both on the fells of the Yorkshire Dales and in the caves and potholes of the area.
