Helvellyn and Swirral Edge, in the middle distance

Police have named the walker who died after falling from Helvellyn earlier this week.

Alan Michael Burns, 39, of Bamber Bridge, Preston, was with two friends when he fell through a cornice near the summit of the 950m (3,117ft) mountain on Monday.

A search party of 20 members of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, with two Search and Rescue Dogs Association handlers, found the walker below Swirral Edge.

Mr Burns was treated at the scene and flown by an RAF helicopter to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, but died of serious head injuries.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said: “There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the immediate family of Mr Burns has been informed.”
