Snowboard club members hand over more than £2,000 to the Edale team

Student snowsports fans have handed more than £2,000 to mountain rescuers.

Members of the Sheffield University Snowboard Club chipped in with the cash for Edale Mountain Rescue Team after boarder Sarah Gooding, a student doctor, spent time on an internship with the team.

Dr Chris Press of the Peak District mountain rescuers received a £2,274 cheque from club members recently towards the running costs of the volunteer team. Charlie Bartlett of the Edale team said the rescuers were extremely grateful for the donation.

The team’s funds were also boosted by a civic effort that raised more than £600 in a street collection.

Chesterfield mayor Councillor Peter Barr joined team members in a walkabout in the town.

Edale team fundraiser Andy Cass said: “The mayoress and the mayor helped us a great deal with our efforts in Chesterfield.

“Each year we rely on the generous contributions of the people of Chesterfield and Sheffield and the towns and villages of the Peak District to support the work of the team.

“On Saturday we received more than £500 in Bakewell and nearly £600 in Chesterfield, which is very gratefully received, and vital to our work. These latest donations by the public and efforts by our fundraising volunteers have helped towards our annual running costs of around £50,000.

“Without the generous contributions of local people we would not be able to run our mountain rescue team.”
