Gordale Scar, scene of the man's tumble

A walker was rescued after taking a tumble at a Yorkshire Dales beauty spot.

The Cave Rescue Organisation was alerted about 1.15pm yesterday, Saturday, after the incident at Gordale Scar in Malhamdale.

There was initial confusion after three 999 calls were received putting the injured 36-year-old man in different locations.

He had fallen 2m (7ft), head-first on the path above the waterfall in the scar, suffering a suspected broken and dislocated shoulder.

Despite his injuries, he managed to carry on walking to Water Sinks, near Malham Tarn, 3km (2 miles) away.

An air ambulance joined rescuers, but the walker was eventually found by members of the Cave Rescue Team, treated and taken to hospital by road ambulance.

A spokesperson for the volunteer team, which carries out rescues both on the fells and in the caves of the Yorkshire Dales, said once an incident is reported, it is easier to deal with if the casualty stays where he or she is.
