The pothole lies on the fell above Yockenthwaite

Cavers have issued a warning of the dangerous state of part of a Yorkshire Dales system.

The White Rose Pothole Club said one of the entrances to the Langstroth Pot is collapsing and extreme care is necessary when using the route.

The warning has been passed on by the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association, which carries out rescues both on the fells and in the caves of the area.

A spokesperson for the pothole club said: “Due to heavy floods over the past year the middle of the Hole in the Floor shakehole is collapsing into the fault it was formed on.

“In the past month two slabs of rock have been cleared from below the entrance that were blocking the passage forward. The rock is fractured here and is being undermined by the floodwater.

“Also the crawl beyond is filling with rubble as is the chamber below the vertical squeeze. Anybody using this entrance to Langstroth Pot please take extreme care.”

The pothole lies on the slopes of Hagg overlooking the hamlet of Yockenthwaite in Langstrothdale.
