Ennerdale Water, scene of the reports of 'gunshots'

Armed police were sent to a Cumbrian lake after a member of the public reported hearing what they thought were gunshots.

Police said the noises were followed by screaming on Ennerdale Water in the West of the Lake District.

Officers were alerted at 5.15pm after the noises were heard on the lake, which lies on the route of the Coast to Coast Walk.

A Cumbria Constabulary spokesperson said: “After a thorough investigation it was established that the noises were caused by people in a kayak capsizing on the lake.

“No-one was injured or in danger either on the boat or near the lake.

“Police investigated the area and as a precaution armed police were deployed, but no further action was required.”
