A third soldier has died more than two weeks after collapsing during an SAS selection exercise in the Brecon Beacons.

The reservist, who has not been named, was one of six taking part in the training on Pen y Fan, south Wales’s highest mountain.

Lance Corporal Craig Roberts, 24, was pronounced dead on the mountainside on 13 July and Edward Maher, 31, died hospital in Merthyr Tydfil about three hours after being rescued during selection training in 29C heat.

The Ministry of Defence announced today the death of the third soldier.

An MoD statement said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that a third Army reserve soldier injured during a training exercise in the Brecon Beacons has died of his injuries.

“The family have asked for a period of grace before he is named and request that this is respected by the media.”

Pen y Fan, at 886m (2,907ft) the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons, is the scene of the gruelling Fan Dance test, which sees soldiers take part in a gruelling timed double ascent and descent of the peak.
