More than 80 walkers and runners helped raise cash for a rescue team in a Snowdonia mountain challenge.

The Oggie 8 is the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation’s main fundraiser and involves tackling eight 3,000ft peaks in the area.

Teams of four or more from all over England and Wales took part in the challenge at the weekend, with the To the Pub quartet of Laurence Brand, Wayne Morgan, Michael Shaw and James Street first home in a time of 7hrs 48mins for the course.

The event was topped off with a party at the rescue team’s Ogwen Valley base, and the team was hopeful £10,000 would be raised by participants.

The Oggie 8 Mountain Challenge attracted 89 walkers and runners, 75 of whom finished the course.

Last back was the Fellowship of the Hills squad in a time of 14hrs 28mins.

Chris Lloyd of Ogwen Mountain Rescue Organisation said: “We congratulate and thank all the participants for taking part in the mountain challenge.

“We also thank all the businesses who offered goods and prizes for this event.”

The course involves the ascent of Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen, Carnedd Dafydd and Pen yr Ole Wen, before descending to the new visitor centre at the Idwal car park.

After a brief refuel, competitors ascended Yr Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach and Tryfan, finally returning to Oggie Base.

At the finish, footsore challengers were greeted with tea, scones, bara brith – Welsh fruit bread – and beer.

A mobile fish and chip van booked for the event provided further energy replacement before the prizegiving ceremony. Participants were also able make use of a sports massage to ease their aching muscles.

Local and national businesses provided food and drink as well as vouchers to prizewinners. Outdoor retailers also donated tokens to spend in their shops.

Mr Lloyd said: “We really appreciate these generous contributions, all of which go the make this event the success that it is.”

The Oggie 8 has been run for six years.
