A walker was stretchered from a Lake District fell after slipping and breaking her ankle.

The woman from Chesterfield in Derbyshire was walking on Great Mell Fell, north of Dockray, about 1.30pm today when she slipped on wet grass.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out after her companion, unable to get a mobile phone signal, made her way from the 537m (1,762ft) hill to call for help.

The team was able to reach the scene on foot and was with the injured walker within half an hour.

She was treated on the hill, given pain relief and her leg was splinted.

The woman was then stretchered off the fell to a waiting ambulance which took her to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.
