The Stornoway Coastguard helicopter joined the search

A walker was found safe and well after a major search in the Highlands involving mountain rescuers, a lifeboat crew, police dogs and a Coastguard helicopter.

The woman, in her 60s, was reported overdue on Monday in the Glenelg area, west of Glenshiel.

Police were alerted about 4.40pm and co-ordinated a search involving the Glenelg Mountain Rescue Team which carried out searches in the Sandaig Bay area.

The Kyle of Lochalsh lifeboat, The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway and officers from the Police Scotland dog section also joined the operation.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The missing hillwalker was traced safe and well at around 11pm by local police officers in the Arnisdale area, after having to take an alternative route due to the inclement weather conditions. She did not require any medical attention.”

Skye and Lochalsh Area Inspector Lynda Allan praised the efforts of all involved in the rescue effort. She said: “Police Scotland would like to thank crew members of the Glenelg Mountain Rescue team, Kyle lifeboat and HM Coastguard for their assistance with the search, especially given the inclement weather conditions.

“The joined up multi-agency approach during this type of incident is essential to securing a successful outcome: preventing loss of life and serious injury.”
