A walker has died after falling from a scrambling route on a Lake District fell.

The 80-year-old man was with a group on Sharp Edge on Blencathra on Wednesday when he fell from an exposed part of the ridge.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 1.05pm.

A team spokesperson said: “Part-way across the ridge he fell at the most difficult and exposed section.

“A passer-by managed to reach him and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the Great North Air Ambulance responded quickly, managing to drop off their doctor close by.

“Unfortunately, due to his injuries, there was nothing that could be done to save him.

“Keswick team members responded and carried the gentleman down off the hill. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the gentleman’s family and friends.”

The incident involved 16 volunteers from Keswick MRT and lasted 4½ hours.

  • Our original report, based on information supplied, erroneously stated the man’s age was 70 and that the incident happened in dry, sunny weather. Our apologies for this.
