Children from Harris Primary School enjoy their gorge scramble with Amber Brown

Pupils from a Preston school enjoyed a week of activities thanks to a collaboration between the Outward Bound Trust and the owners of two major outdoors brands.

Derbyshire company Equip Outdoor Technologies sponsored a group of Harris Primary School children at the residential adventure at the trust’s Ullswater base.

The firm owns the Rab and Lowe Alpine brands, and is running a two-year partnership with Outward Bound.

Equip employee ambassadors Amber Brown and Philippa Hill joined 59 pupils from the Fulwood school, along with six of their teachers, at the centre on the shore of the Cumbrian lake.

Activities included rowing and canoeing on Ullswater, gorge scrambling and an ascent of Gowbarrow Fell. Instructors worked with the children in mixed group of about a dozen to encourage independence, teamwork and listening skills.

Ms Brown said her memorable moment was when her group went gorge scrambling and seeing the children work together to progress up the gorge, even though they tried to push her into the water at the end.

Her colleague Ms Hill said she was greatly impressed with her group when, after a long tough uphill hike through the mountains they reached the top of Gowbarrow Fell. She said: “It was a perfect sunny day but there were some tears but also plenty of smiles from my group but all shared a massive sense of achievement at reaching the top.”

Equip corporate social responsibility manager Debbie Read said: “A partnership like this is a great chance to remind our employees why we work in the outdoor industry.

“Inspiring a future generation to enjoy the outdoors and bringing that energy back into the workplace through our employee ambassadors is an experience we can all benefit from at Equip.”
