Canavan leads Ramblers' protest walk
The Ramblers’ Association’s Scottish president has been hitting the trails this weekend.Dennis Canavan, a former MP and MSP, led a walk today to the Sauchieburn estate, where millionaire owner Bill Roddie is trying to keep out walkers, despite the right to roam granted by the Land Reform (Scotland) Act.And yesterday, he led a party of walkers on a brief, 30-minute stroll to demonstrate the health benefits of walking.

Lakes boatman's legal challenge fails
A boating enthusiast has failed in a legal bid to muddy the waters in a case involving a Lake District speed limit.Kevan Furber had argued that a bylaw introduced to slow down boats on Windermere was unclear – it was vague as to whether it was measured in miles per hour or nautical miles per hour.But a judge has ruled that the law is perfectly clear and Mr Furber will now face prosecution for exceeding the limit, while towing a 74-year-old blind water skier.

Footpath bid in Vixen Tor access battle
Three outdoor bodies will tomorrow lobby councillors to grant rights of way to a crag at the centre of an access row.The Ramblers’ Association, British Mountaineering Council and the Vixen Tor Action Group will hand in evidence that local people regularly walked paths to Vixen Tor, a granite outcrop on Dartmoor that was a haven for climbers and walkers before owner Mary Alford bought the land.The tor was excluded as access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act and has since become a cause célèbre for both climbers and walkers who want to use the site for recreation.
Appeal against Pooh bridge footpath action
Campaigners are urging action against a riding arena built across a path near the famous Pooh Sticks Bridge.Hartfield landowner Ben Van Praagh built the riding paddock across the right of way in East Sussex and has now withdrawn a retrospective application for planning permission.
Police name Torridon fall victim
Police have named a woman who died in a fall in Torridon.Weilin Wang, 24, of Caversham, Reading, Berkshire, fell into a gully on Fuar Tholl, near Achnashellach in Glen Carron on Monday.She was with a group of walkers when the accident happened.

Rescuers called to Lakes 'crevasse' walker
A Lake District rescue team had an unusual callout on early on Tuesday: a man stuck in a crevasse.A spokesman for the team said: “There are no glaciers in Wasdale.” The rescuers were alerted to the plight of the walker by a 999 call saying the man was stuck in a type of chasm more commonly found in Khumbu or Yakutat, even though the caller was unsure which mountain he was on.
