Police name Cairn Gorm fall victim

Police have named the climber who died in an accident on the northern corries of Cairn Gorm yesterday.David Rainey, 32, of Royston, Hertfordshire, died in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, after being airlifted by RAF helicopter following a fall in Coire an t-Sneachda.

Man dies after Cairn Gorm fall

A man has died after a fall on Cairn Gorm.The unnamed 33-year-old mountaineer died in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, after being airlifted from Coire an t-Sneachda by a helicopter from RAF Kinloss.Emergency services were alerted at 11.40am today.

Historic footpath mapping project loses its way

A major project to discover forgotten footpaths has lost its way, according to a report about to be published.Discovering Lost Ways, set up to map disused rights of way in the wake of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, (CRoW Act) has failed to reopen a single bridleway or footpath.The Discovering Lost Ways project has become mired Now, Natural England is recommending the scheme be radically changed, according to a report to be published in The Times today, because it has become bogged down in long-winded processes and red tape.Two pilot schemes were run in Cheshire and Shropshire, the intention being to map any routes which had inadvertently been omitted from official maps.

Walkers on the Welsh hills and mountains are being offered a better weather service.Enhanced weather forecasts are now available online for Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, with extra information to aid safety in the uplands.

National park rangers have issued another reminder to keep dogs under control as we enter the bird breeding season.Out-of-control dogs can cause harm to wildlife and chicks may die if parent birds are scared away from nests by pets.

SAS man will lead wheelchair attempt on Ben Nevis

A former SAS officer will lead a team of ten wheelchair users to the top of Britain’s highest mountain later this year.Action man Ken Hames is recruiting volunteers to help with the ascent, which will involve getting the disabled mountaineers to the summit of Ben Nevis.

Hike will mark start of ultra running season

The first race of the ultra-running challenge hoofs it into the hills next weekend.The Wuthering Hike, a 32 miler (51km) runs from the Bronte village of Haworth in West Yorkshire, over the supposed site of Wuthering Heights – hence its name – and heads into Lancashire and Calderdale before returning over the Pennine moors to its start point.

Canoeist in river tragedy named

A canoeist who died after being trapped on a weir in a Yorkshire river was named as Mark Watson.The 37-year-old hospital worker from Swillington, Leeds, was pulled from the River Calder at Luddendenfoot near Halifax, but died in Calderdale Royal Hospital.Mr Watson and three others were using inflatable canoes when they got into trouble in the turbulent water around the weir.

Everest torch will burn bright

Chinese authorities say a flame will burn on Everest’s summit to celebrate the country’s hosting of the Olympic games this summer.EverestScientists have conducted tests on the torch which will be carried to the highest point on earth, and say they are confident it will stay alight, despite the paucity of oxygen on the 8,848m (29,029ft) peak.

A climber found at the foot of a buttress on Ben Nevis has died in hospital.David Carney was found near the CIC hut under the mountain’s north face on Friday.
