More heavy snow is expected on Ben Nevis and other Highland peaks

Police have issued a warning after a climber was seriously injured after falling hundreds of feet this morning on Ben Nevis.

The climber fell in the Organ Pipes area of Coire na Ciste on the mountain’s north face. He was airlifted to hospital in Fort William and is expected to be transferred to hospital in Glasgow. Police said further heavy snowfalls are expected and walkers and climbers should check avalanche forecasts and weather reports before taking to the hills.

Northern Constabulary said they received reports of the incident at 10.30am today. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and a helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth went to the man’s aid and he was found at the foot of the climb.

The spokesperson said: “A number of other climbers and walkers remained with the casualty giving first aid until he could be airlifted from the hill.

“The casualty was airlifted to Belford Hospital, Fort William with serious injuries and is it likely that he will be transferred to the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow for further treatment.

“His identity is not known at present and police enquiries are ongoing. It has not been ascertained whether the accident occurred as a result of an avalanche or whether he was part of a group.”

Area commander Chief Inspector John Chisholm said: “We are expecting more severe weather and heavy snowfalls over the next couple of days. Any climbers going onto the hills should check the latest reports issued by the sportscotland Avalanche Information Service and the latest weather reports.”
