Dow Crag, scene of the incident on Saturday

A climber was rescued after injuring himself in a fall on a Lake District crag at the weekend.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was called at about 1.45pm to help the man who fell while climbing in Great Gully on Dow Crag.

The climber was treated at the scene for ankle injuries before being airlifted by a Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley for further treatment at Furness General Hospital, Barrow-in Furness.

Twelve team members took part in the rescue on the crag, which faces the Old Man of Coniston.

There are more than 140 recognised climbing routes on the rhyolite crag, many of which extend to 100m, and range up to E6 6c.
