A walker was airlifted from England’s second highest mountain after falling on hard snow.

The woman was on Green How below Scafell’s summit yesterday when she fell and injured her leg.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 3.05pm and asked colleagues from the Duddon and Furness team to help in the operation.

A Wasdale team spokesperson said: “A Royal Navy Sea King from HMS Gannet lifted six team members to near the casualty site.

“A combined effort of MRT personnel and the helicopter crew saw the casualty packaged and loaded aboard the aircraft to be taken to the Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.”

The woman was also treated for hypothermia.

The rescue lasted just over three hours and involved 14 Wasdale MRT volunteers.
