A teacher has been praised for performing vital resuscitation on a student when he collapsed on a Lake District fell.

The group was walking on Pavey Ark in Great Langdale when the youth collapsed near Bright Beck.

Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was alerted shortly before 12.20pm today.

A team spokesperson said: “The team was called and we quickly identified this as a very serious incident.

“It was known that an RAF helicopter was in the area training with Wasdale MRT. It was immediately requested to assist, which it did.

“One of the group’s teachers was carrying out cardio-pulmonary resuscitation when they arrived, and he was quickly evacuated to West Cumberland Infirmary.”

The spokesperson said latest report was that he was stable in the intensive care unit of the Whitehaven hospital.

The spokesperson added: “It’s certain that the speedy delivery of CPR by the teacher and the rapid helicopter evacuation to hospital are the two crucial factors in giving this young man a fighting chance.”
