A man died after collapsing on a Lake District fell.

A passing walker tried to keep the 59-year-old man alive by performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation but to no avail.

Rescuers were alerted on Saturday after the walker collapsed at the summit of Latrigg, overlooking Keswick.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team members were already dealing with an incident on nearby Blencathra, and members went to the aid of the collapsed man on the 368m (1,207ft) fell.

A Keswick MRT spokesperson said the Great North Air Ambulance arrived almost immediately its members got to the site.

The spokesperson said: “Despite the efforts of all concerned, the man’s life could not be saved.

“The team recovered his body from the fell, and handed it over to the relevant authorities.”

While the Latrigg incident was going on, the Keswick team was helping a woman who was stuck on steep ground on Blencathra.

The 34-year-old was walking on the mountain with a friend and a dog. She became cragfast on the Foule Crag side of Sharp Edge.

Six rescuers went to the scene immediately, and a smaller party followed, to help her to safety from her precarious position.

The team spokesperson said: “She was assisted to the top, and then walked off to Mousthwaite Comb, where she was reunited with her walking companion.”

The rescue involved 13 team volunteers.

The following day, the team was called to help a group of young men who decided to camp on an island on Thirlmere the day before the forecast storm.

The spokesperson said: “The waves on the lake, and the strong gusty wind unnerved them, and although three of them managed to get ashore, the other two, and all their equipment were left behind.

“The team’s boat and swiftwater rescue technicians attended, and the group and equipment were safely recovered.”

Seventeen volunteers took part in the rescue.

The same day, Keswick MRT was called to help a student who fell crossing a stream near Rosthwaite in Borrowdale while taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition.

The team spokesperson said: “A local team member went out and located the group.

“The young lady was able to walk slowly to towards Rosthwaite with the rest of the group, and their assessor arranged transport for them.”
