A walker attempting the Coast to Coast route was rescued after injuring himself in Ennerdale.

The 80-year-old from the Oxford area slipped while crossing a beck and suffered a head injury.

His walking companion helped him out of the water and the pair made their way to Black Sail Youth Hostel.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 6.10pm on Wednesday. A spokesperson said: “Team members assessed the casualty and treated him for his injuries before transporting him to a land ambulance near Gillerthwaite from where he was taken the West Cumberland Hospital at Whitehaven for further checks and treatment.”

The rescue lasted just over two hours and involved 18 volunteers from Cockermouth MRT.
